Scent of spring: Songbirds, cherry blossoms, and warmer days

Image
Spring, perhaps the most awaited season of the year, is about to grace this region of the world with its presence. I know spring is about to arrive in Delaware because after a series of unusually frigid mornings, which lasted from December through February, cheerful chirping of red-breasted robins, blue jays, and chickadees has now filled the morning air. In contrast to spring mornings, winter mornings are so hushed and uneventful that one may even question if birds exist in this land at all. To me, birdsongs are the harbinger of spring.  With the first sight of a bluejay perched on the backyard fence or a cardinal dancing on a leafless cherry branch, I know that my wait for spring is almost over, for I’ve learned from past experiences that an increase in bird activity signifies the approach of spring!  In this part of the world, during spring, nature comes alive with an abundance of activity. Everywhere I look, I witness signs of life. I witness new life in the ...

Best of luck, Bangladesh!

I will be at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in spirit tonight! Wishing our tigers the very best of luck!! India is the defending champions - they are a mighty team. And it will probably be very difficult to beat them. So, I want to wait till the end of the match to begin my celebration. I just want my brothers to play and show their best on the field. It's a game so ONLY ONE team will win. I, as a Bangladeshi and a cricket lover, want our tigers to present us with a competitive match, so that even if we lose we can say that our cricketers fought courageously before conceding the defeat. The game starts at 11:30 EST. What a bad timing for those living on America's east coast! But I could not have slept tonight even if I wanted to. Once again, lots of good wishes for Team Bangladesh on their quarter-finals match against India! Facebook Page

Football on Facebook

We witnessed blatant rivalries among school friends in the months of June and July. No, they were not participating in any competition, rather their favorite teams were. It was the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which turned our friends into foes. It was one occasion when two close pals did not necessarily support the same team. Arch rivalry sparked among the Brazilian and Argentine supporters. An Argentine fan wrote on his college friend’s Facebook wall about the rage that engulfed him upon learning that his friend, who was once an Argentine fan, is now a die-hard Brazilian supporter. The Argentine fan clearly felt betrayed by his friend - this happens only in football. We witnessed taunting of friends. I remember a friend jeering an Argentine fan, saying “Could you properly digest the ek haali goal (or, the four goals)?” Another friend promised that he would donate money to the poor if his team made it to the finals. Statuses were updated even at the darkest hours of the night. The wor...
